MBL’s Norway Trip 2023

Aurora

On Thursday, March 23rd, 2023, I along with another Mother's Bridge of Love’s volunteer, Tianyi Zhao, traveled with Xinran from London to the snowy capital city of Norway, Oslo. In the afternoon, accompanied by the local representatives, we visited the Oslo City Art Collection - Iron Rose. The collection commemorates the 77 people who lost their lives in a horrific incident that occurred on July 22nd, 2011 in Norway.

I grew up in Xinjiang, this was my first year studying in the UK. As one of the MBL’s volunteers, I was so lucky to have the opportunity to learn about Norway, adoptive families and adopted Chinese girls through meetings and excursions. Before the trip, Tianyi and I were given training by Xinran on Chinese and international adoption, our knowledge and touch on MBL and adoption only started to sprout, and thrived on the day we landed in Norway.

The next morning, Tianyi and I accompanied Xinran to the International Adoption Office of the Norwegian Civil Affairs Department for a combined online and offline international adoption theme seminars. During lunchtime, we shared and discussed stories and information about Chinese women's roles with a Norwegian female writer and filmmaker. In the afternoon, accompanied by the local authorities, we went with local adoptive families to morn for the Chinese girl’s passing, and to thank the artist who crafted the iron rose for her. Finally, they went to the historic village of Bærums Verk for a feast, which dates back to 1640 and is rich in artistic features.

It was an extremely busy and meaningful day. For me, the more I learned about adoption, the more I felt that between birth and adoption, especially for the women involved, there are too many difficulties and pains, but also their relative resilience and bravery, and that throughout the history of adoption, countries, organizations and individuals are doing their best to improve. As the conference progressed, we, as volunteers, became more aware of the responsibility and mission of MBL. For the more than 500,000 adopted Chinese girls in 27 countries around the world, they inevitably face the trauma of their abandonment and the need to understand Chinese culture and Chinese mothers, and what MBL does is to bridge the gap between birth and adoption and between East and West. Because of MBL, they know that the reason why their mothers gave them up not because they did not love them, but because life was too hard and their mothers had no other choice. For these girls, MBL is an essential bridge between birth and nurture, and between Eastern and Western cultures, for more than half a million girls to grow up.

On Saturday,It was a full day of sharing the sorrows and joys of the cultural intersection of birth and adoption between China and Norway with Norwegian adoptive families at a local church. After nine hours of listening and sharing, everyone's hearts were still immersed in the love and ties of birth and adoption.

On Sunday, Xinran was invited to visit the adopted girls’ families to learn more about them and help them in any way she could on behalf of Mother's Bridge Of Love. As for Tianyi and I, we spent the whole day touring Vigeland Sculpture Park and Oslo's various museums, learning about the history and life of Norway through art and collections. What impressed me most was the Vigiland Sculpture Park, created by master sculptor Gustav Vigiland over a period of 30 years (1907-1942), which is currently the largest nude sculpture park in the world. A walk through it is extraordinarily touching.

Time flew by and the five days were soon over. On the 27th Xinran went to the Ministry of Civil Affairs for a meeting and to meet with her Norwegian editor. Afterwards we returned together to London with this memento.

The five-day trip to Norway has come to an end, but MBL’s love and responsibility that lingers between birth and nurture never ends. Albert Camus said, "Getting used to despair is worse than despair itself." In this world, there is always a compulsion to give up, and there is always the love and gift for nothing. But love never fails. Between loss and gain, between hurt and healing, in this spring when everything grows, may we run to the summer with hope.
