29th B4K Library Opens, Spreading Warmth and Love
On December 29, 2024, as the year drew to a close, the 29th B4K (Books for Kids) Library was officially established in Nanjing at the Xuanwu District Home of Compassion and Kindness for the Disabled(南京玄武区博爱勤善残疾人之家), thanks to the collaborative efforts of MBL (The Mothers’ Bridge of Love) and Sino-UK Cultural Bridge (SUCB), along with the unwavering support of dedicated volunteers and donors.
This heart-warming event was marked by a donation ceremony where volunteers, led by Julie Zhu from SUCB, worked together to create a welcoming library for children with special needs, often referred to as "stars" for their unique radiance and resilience.
Books and More: A Gift of Love
The newly inaugurated library received:
500 books including a variety of picture books.
3 bookshelves, 4 reading tables, and 8 chairs to create a comfortable reading environment.
Creative materials like 150 colouring books, 1,500 scratch art papers, 30 sets of acrylic markers, and 236 glow-in-the-dark scratch art sets to inspire artistic expression.
This initiative not only brought physical resources but also symbolized an investment in the children’s future. The library is a beacon of hope, aiming to nurture their love for reading and learning.
A Day of Connection and Joy
The event also included interactive activities where volunteers toured the centre to understand the children’s lives, sampled pumpkin buns handmade by the children, and participated in joyful music sessions. The children played African drums, performing songs like Good Days and Going to Spring Mountain, while volunteers joined in to create a harmonious and uplifting atmosphere.
The smiles on the children’s faces were the most touching reward, reflecting the profound impact of love and care.
About the B4K Project
Since its inception in 2004, the B4K initiative, initiated by MBL and supported by SUCB, has built 29 libraries across China in collaboration with international volunteers and organizations. These libraries provide books and learning resources to underserved schools and communities, bridging gaps in education and fostering cultural understanding.
Looking Ahead
The 29th B4K Library is a testament to the enduring power of community and compassion. As children sit at the newly arranged reading desks, quietly flipping through books, their futures are illuminated by the collective efforts of those who believe in the transformative power of education and love.
